Monoclonal antibodies: 'great hope' in Covid treatments fails against variants
Exclusive: no leading contender is effective against all the South African, Brazilian and Kent variants.
The great hope for drug treatments against Covid-19 – the monoclonal antibodies – are failing against variants of the virus, such as those that have emerged in South Africa and Brazil, scientists have found.
They are failing *FOR NOW* nothing is conclusive, maybe they are less EFFECTIVE, but it is better than nothing. The vaccines so far have tested to be effective against the variants, the only thing is that their effectiveness is REDUCED...... Any vaccine with a minimum of 50% would meet requirements for being approved, so if you take vaccines that are allegedly more than 90% effective and you add the variant into the equation, you will see that even with a reduced rate of effectiveness, they are still far above the threshold and still would make a difference...... even 50% is better than 0%.
Also, with mRNA, vaccine makers can adapt future versions to the new variants in a matter of weeks. These new variants are small mutations to the protein spike, they don't render the vaccines ineffective, these mutations only mean that the spikes are now more likely to attach to your cells than ever before, they do a better a job of it, so they are more infectious, and you have more odds of being infected with a small viral load than before, and even with a reduced vaccine efficiency, you would still have enough protection to bring down hospitaisation and deaths in the long term.
As far as the monoclonal studies, that's preliminary - what matters right now are the different vaccines being deployed which will still offer enough protect well above the minimum threshold, albeit a reduced one, but still an important one........
The problem here is not the variants, it's the bloody ignorant fools that ignore guidelines - if every person wore a damn mask, follow distancing and sanitary guidelines, the virus spread would be minimal, so the best cure for this pandemic is discipline, this discipline works with ANY variants present and future - if people are relying on a miracle drug or vaccines to end this pandemic, they are truly F.... mistaken ! The vaccines are only a band-aid solution, all it will do is bring (hopefully) down the cases of hospitalisation - BUT it won't stop the virus from spreading, it will only reduce numbers, but there will always be some level of community transmission - herd immunity is something that is very unrealistic at this stage. Nobody should be too worried about variants, this is what viruses do, it's nothing new.....
