Physicists say there is a possibility that our world is merely a simulation
They claim there may be evidence of this if only we know where to look
For instance, some of the laws of physics may not quite add up, they say

The year is 2050 and super-intelligent robots have taken over the planet.

Except you have no idea, because you're living in a computer simulation, depicting what life was like in 2015.

Everything you see and touch right now has been created by robotic overlords who are using humanity as playthings in their virtual game.

That's the radical theory put forward by a number of scientists over the years, who claim there is a possibility that our world as we know it is fake.
It may sound ridiculous, but this 'simulation argument' is being taken seriously by physicists who say they could find evidence that confirms it

It would be one big computer program simulating everything, including human brains down to neurons and synapses
Several years ago, Silas Beane of the University of Bonn suggested, like Minsky, that there may be signs that we are living in a simulation.

i think this is absurd,,,,,,,,,,,,why? i tell you why....
now assuming we are all living in a virtual world,in a cocoon say,all controlled by robots or aliens, this means that the existence of the creator ,GOD is non existent,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no religion no belief no nothing.....

ok if i were to believe this theory or an assumption or absurdity to some degree then who created these robots that are controlling us? must be a bigger force than them thats behind it all ?

now humans as we know are flesh and blood,we are living breathing entities,,we reproduce, grow old and die, dust to dust,if these robots are controlling us i am sure they can extend our life to the next level?

tasman,,i told you get off that red wine yesterday :D

Maybe or maybe not, maybe We are just programed to think that way
How can You be sure, our brain can think real of fake , If I think I am Napoleon I will be Napoleon in my mind

Maybe our whole universe is a science experiment of some junior high school student in another universe. (Given how things are going here he may not get a good grade.)

The question of whether what we see is real or simulated has perplexed humans since at least the Ancient philosophers. But it has been given a new and different edge in recent years with the development of powerful computers and artificial intelligence, which some have argued shows how easily such a simulation could be created

Maybe We are are just a past
At some point in the future, humans as we know ourselves will cease to exist. Whether we become extinct with no evolutionary descendants, or leave one or more post-human species as our inheritance, we humans will eventually be gone. But if we do leave futuristic descendants, those descendants might be quite interested in creating ancestor simulations, virtual universes populated by conscious humans. And if the technology to craft such simulations was sufficiently popular, they could proliferate so widely that the first-person experience of such simulations would outnumber the first-person experiences of humans who have actually existed in fundamental reality.
What year is now . 2016 or ...............................................................

i understand what your saying tasman but one thing which humans have failed to replicate and that is emotions,,,,instinctual responses,,,,all those 5 senses we take for granted and are born with cannot be replicated.

Your way of thinking or the thinking of those scientists and such like is very intriguing and leaves alot to be given thought to but us humans from the beginning of time are so wrapped up in our own ideology of our existence that taking it to a totally new dimension would be absolutely crazy.

The christian, jewish and islamic doctrine is of one god,who created adam and eve,who started the human race.
hell and heaven is part of our belief,no one has ever contemplated anything other than this being the basis of how we came to exist, unless of course your belief lies elsewhere,ie the evolution theory, mind you its still a theory unless proven and other man-made religions or pathetic beliefs.

Eight or nine years ago, I was working for a gaming company, on an RPG that never saw the light of day, because they went bankrupt before creating anything.

One of the most annoying things about RPGs (roleplaying games) is that all the NPCs (non-player characters) typically either stand in the same place all the time, or wander around in a set path. I wanted to change that, so I fed some heuristics into the AI (artificial intelligence).

If an NPC was a resident of a town, they'd need to eat. They'd check their inventory, and if they didn't have any, they'd go get some. If an NPC was, say, a blacksmith, they'd make things in real time - rather than the more typical approach of updating their stock each time an area is loaded, based on what items were in their inventory. If they had no crafting items, they'd go look for something.

Absolutely nothing fancy about it. Nothing difficult to do, just something that nobody else had ever gotten round to before. Just a slightly more advanced version of what Black Isle and Troika used to do.

But a curious thing happened. We sent an NPC to look for the nearest item of the type they wanted - and forgot to check if the nearest item an NPC was looking happened to be in the inventory of another character. Because we hadn't anticipated NPCs stealing from each other, the theft method didn't filter to only act on the player character...so from a simple model of collecting resources, we managed to accidentally invente war, as the NPCs AI told them to be hostile to an increasing number of other NPCs over time.

I'm not suggesting an RPG is a universe comparable to ours....but it also kinda is a universe of sorts. It's a simplified, abstracted universe, but it has it's own internal rules, and the actors behave in a way completely unpredicted by the developers.

Can you imagine a universe slightly more complicated than that? Note ours was only slightly more complicated than Arcanum, which was only slightly more complicated than Fallout 2. Perhaps the next guy also notices that nobody ever goes to the toilet, so they do the same thing, but also add bowel and bladder metres that have to be emptied, and so on.

How far can you increment the complexity one little step at a time, until you get something as complicated as our universe? Can we eventually create a virtual world that follows the rules of ours well, like Red Dwarf's Total Immersion Video Games, or the Star Trek Holodeck?

If we can create a universe as complicated as our own, isn't it perfectly possible that somebody else can too?

If we were a simulation, would it matter anyway? Does it make any difference to the experience you've had between the time you were born and now?

bouldrake i had to read twice what you wrote coz it didnt sink in first time, kinda pretty hard to grasp
but finally i understood what you wrote.
the only creature on earth clever enough to create a simulation would be man himself as he is always reaching for the stars, trying to excel in whatever he can, which i guess is natural and part of the human nature after all.

i dont think we can ever take this subject seriously because its just a thought and nothing has been proved.

of course all the cleverclogs can put forward as much facts and info as they want but bottom line is apart from an interesting read it will bear no fruit and eventually the whole idea of it will dwindle away and forgotten.

I think it is often good to be open minded and look at the possibilities.
As far as I know, everything is possible.

Reminds me of the guy many years ago....can't recall his name at the moment. I remember
if from psychology classes. His theory 'The Brain'. It's a crazy yet very interesting theory
especially from someone that lived so long ago. What he theorized, only one brain existed.
The one brain, thinks all of this. You don't really exist and I don't really exist and no one
really exists. We're all thought up by one brain.

What I find so interesting about that theory is, they didn't have computers in his day. Today
we can look at his theory and compare it to a computer network.....in other words, a 'server'
or 'one huge control center'.

Did you really do anything yesterday or last year or the year before, etc? OR do you just
believe you did?

I do believe human manipulation is possible but that relates to my belief in a higher power.
Still, how did that higher power come to be? I don't deny the existence of the higher power.
I do keep an open mind on the possibilities of where that higher power is, how it came to
be, and the various ways one may look at it.

One thing is for sure, If I am truly a moderator at this forum, would whomever it is doing

Ohhh noooo....Looks like a glitch has caused tasman, bouldrake, pindokhan and valerie to wake up from our Matrix, must report this to my boss the architect immediately, he will know what to do, hope he will rewrite this program and fix that awful glitch before they all unplug themselfs.

Your post is intriguing and I have read of this before in some scientific journals. Yes, some leading physicists do say there is evidence strongly suggesting we are nothing more than a simulation and possibly a simulation of the "real world" which is out there somewhere. Dark matter? Heaven? What a mysterious universe we live in - that is, if we're actually living.

Another theory somewhat related. It is thought by some physicists that each of our lives has an almost limitless number of simulations going on at any one time. Thousands, even millions of these variations on your life. Sort of like God is so fantastic and unfathomable in His mental capabilities that in order to not be bored, He has to have several trillion TV shows going all at one time!

As a Valerie say...I do believe human manipulation is possible ....yes , and not just pssible , We are doing it and in future we will master it to the perfection
One day in future Earth will not have a humans but maybe will have our program and maybe We are that program , maybe , just maybe

Or maybe all this is just my dream , maybe I am alone in this Universe

Tasman you are never alone, you have all of us.

But i fear one day our computers may have such a highly advanced AI (Artificial intelligence) that they will deem us Humans completely obsolete and mark us for extermination like Skynet did building those Terminators.
