til now - Not English

Locked

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have read that on this forum.

We see people outside of the USA often say something like this :

- I made $20 til now

What does that tell the American reader?
It tells us you no longer make $20. You previously made it but up until now, you no longer do.

Another example

-My add-on worked til now

What does that tell the American reader?
It tells us your add-on no longer works.

Let's do another example:

-I was living in India til now

What does that tell the American reader?
It tells us you no longer live in India.

So when you use the words 'til now' you are using those words improperly. I know what you really mean
but most English speaking people will not.

They will think you are saying:

I use to make $20 but I don't any more
My add-on use to work but it doesn't any more
I use to live in India but I don't any more

I know what you are really saying but most won't:

Up to this point, I have made $20
Up to this point, my add-on works
Up to this point, I still live in India

---------------------------------------------
Slang = til
Proper = until

Oh we rarely talk proper English in the USA. My point is, a lot of people say what I pointed out and
most Americans will take what they are saying, completely opposite. So if they are working in a USA
program, sending in support tickets, or even posting comments on a forum, most will take what they are
saying totally backwards of what they mean.

The only people that talk proper English is the British. Ya got to love the British language....cup o tea
my dear?

By the way charez, American's don't necessarily talk the way you pointed out. What you
pointed out is typo's. Neither do I know what you mean about a triangle having three sides.

I am trying to help people here by pointing out something that is often misunderstood and
could truly cause them to not get the help they need or even to lose money. I am not being
rude.

Not true. Germans, Danes, the Dutch, Norwegians and Swedes tend to speak proper English. The English are almost as cruel to English as Americans are.

I like the British language and the French language the best, me thinks.

I guess it has something to do with my childhood.

I think that Valerie was being rude and condescending. They don't live here so they obviously don't know the language.

To your first sentence:

That is what you get for doing your own thinking

To your second sentence:

Exactly

Darn, after all these years studying English it turns out I don't know sh*t just because I don't happen to live in the US!

By the way, I've got a doubt regarding these sentences:

valerie wrote:I use to make $20 but I don't any more
My add-on use to work but it doesn't any more
I use to live in India but I don't any more

Shouldn't all those "use" actually be "used"? Or is it just another made in the USA language thing?

I've always said if I can type and speak English(And nope I'm not claiming my grammar is perfect),why is it that you don't speak Dutch?

Not so much here, because "write properly, you idiots" is one of the forum rules, but generally speaking, most English speakers do, in fact, speak Dutch. Double Dutch, to be precise.

They should actually speak Spanish in the first place, as we beat the number of Dutch speakers by far.
