What music/song are you listening now?

BouldRake wrote: Anyone know who wrote/performed this first? The lyrics show up nothing in a search, but since this is English and she isn't, it's still more than likely a cover.

DesiSlava - My Pleasure, My Pain (Live On "Pei s men";) - YouTube

Thank you for posting with this song. I enjoy being introduced to music in other languages. How did you find it?

On DesiSlava's official website this song is listed as a single released in 2008 but it does not appear as a track that I can see on any of her albums. I have found that she sings in Bulgarian, Spanish and English.

The music, lyrics and arrangement of "My Pleasure, My Pain" are all by John Themis, the guitarist on stage with DesiSlava and this performance seems to have been the first live performance of the single.

Ah, you're right, thanks for that. She did a gig called "The Secret Concert", and most of the tracks were in English. Since all the others were covers, I've assumed this was also a cover - just an obscure one. But you're right, it was John Themis for her.

My username is non-random - that's rake as in reikall, or wanderer. I've lived a lot of places, and that was one of them. Cultural osmosis, I suppose.

Well thank you again. You have passed on some of what you experienced to another corner of the world. Does reikall come from your ethnic origins?

Interestingly, I played several videos of DesiSlava's before seeing the thumbnail on the RHS of the player for

which I have playing at this very moment. It is a pity that performers such as this do not get decent air-play to wider markets. I am enjoying this concert video very much.

Yeah, kinda - it's an Old Norse word. I'm from the UK, but we were part of the Danelaw - that is, the region occupied by the Danish Vikings. In 878 the Kingdom was theoretically unionised, but we're farm, not city so it was slow to spread - and even today our dialect is still basically Old Norse.

They've got two, seriously good artists. Desislava, and Anelia. There are a few more I like, but they're the two that make you go "wow". They both have the same problem - they sell sexualised commercial crap to make their bread and butter (and Anelia got in trouble for saying that herself in an interview last year), and only get a chance to make a decent record every two or three years.

It's a shame, but that's the world we live in, I suppose.

This is Anelia doing something good:

Another foreign one in English. Antique are a Swedish-Greek band that have a Greek-Nordic blend, sometimes (like this time) in English. Despite that, I discovered these while I lived in Pais Vasco, just to add to the international mix. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but they're definitely unique, and I like 'em.

Eurovision! I found it a lot more interesting and much more enjoyable back when contestants were required to sing in the official language of the country they were representing. I wish they would go back to that rule.

While I was watching this video clip I found myself wondering if the dancing girls might have been in the audience at Rolling Stones concerts in 1964-65. :!:

I guess it's a possibility... and even the boxers might have been there!

This song made it to the Top 20 on the Australian Singles Charts in the mid-80s and was reasonably popular. It was nowhere near as successful as "I Was Only Nineteen (A Walk in the Light Green)", which was essentially a protest song in support of servicemen who were being treated as pariahs because they had fought in the Vietnam war.

Yeah, that's the song that introduced me to Red Gum. I was playing The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and my Aussie mate said it reminded her of I Was Only 19.
